The vision of Sabdamala is to facilitate the understanding of, and identification with, the Nepalese way of life through the learning and practice of Nepalese language, culture and history.
Sabdamala is based on a blend of Nepalese content and modern teaching methodologies. The Sabdamala Academic framework is based on the Board of Studies Syllabus with three broad objectives:
- Using the language
- Moving between cultures and
- Making linguistic connections
The objectives of Sabdamala are as follows:
- to develop a sustainable, self-sufficient teaching and learning program with a focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills;
- to generate interest in the Nepalese language and culture in Australia;
- to provide a platform for the new generations to embrace Nepalese culture.
Sabdamala’s target group includes all children of Nepalese origin residing in Australia aged 5 to 12. Although a separate program for non-Nepalese has not yet been developed, non-Nepalese individuals interest in in learning Nepalese culture and language are invited to be part of the school. Sabdamala continues to build a database of resources that is easily accessible by all Nepalese interested in learning Nepali. It is anticipated that a simple database of online resources will be available from the Sabdamala website by the end of 2011.
