Marrickville West Public School
Sabdamala first commenced its operations from this school on the 18th of April 2010 (Term 2). Marrickville West Public School is located at the corner of Livingstone and Beauchamp street. This school was also used by the GNC Children’s Activity Group in 2004 for Nepalese language classes and this was the reason the school was chosen as the venue. Sabdamala classes ran every Sunday from 3pm to 5pm during the NSW school term. The Marrickville location however, was not convenient to parents and prospective parents and it was decided that a shift would be required. A feasibility study was undertaken on possible suburbs. Suburbs with the greatest concentration of Nepalese were initially reviewed. Members of the community were contacted to get in touch with prospective parents. After tentative suburbs were defined, schools were contacted to request the running of the Nepalese community language classes. A decision was made by the Sabdamala Management Committee to shift the location of Sabdamala – Marrickville to Granville and Campsie.
Granville Public School
Sabdamala began its classes at the Granville Public School on the 6th of February 2011. Classes have been running regularly during the NSW School terms. Granville Public School is located on Lena St and is close to the train station, shops and a high concentration of Nepalese families. Approximately 30 children are currently enrolled at Sabdamala – Granville and are distributed across three levels. The levels of enrolment are determined based on key criteria such as ability of the child, age and exposure to Nepalese language and culture. Classes run every Sunday from 10am to 12pm. Samindra Shrestha, Sabdamala’s financial officer oversees operations at Sabdamala – Granville.
